TAHOE CITY, Calif. – As summer heats up so does the anticipation for one of Lake Tahoe’s most beloved charitable events, Boarding For Breast Cancer’s (B4BC) 20th Annual Skate the Lake this weekend.

This milestone event combines outdoor recreation with community spirit and a powerful mission to support breast cancer education, prevention, and programs for survivors.

“People should participate because this is an amazing family event for all ability levels,” said Curt Sterner, B4BC’s event operations manager and co-founder. “… we get out there and roll together for prevention and awareness.”

The two-day festivities kick off on Saturday with a community celebration at Commons Beach in Tahoe City. From noon to 7 p.m., there will be live music, yoga, barbecue, and drinks in addition to a silent auction and raffle.

On Sunday, participants embark on a scenic 28-mile or 9-mile journey along the picturesque shores of North Lake Tahoe.

It begins at Sugar Pine Point Park. There skaters, bikers, and rollers will make their way to Palisades Tahoe before finishing at Commons Beach. The route is dotted with hydration stations, ensuring participants stay refreshed and energized.

Skate the Lake welcomes everyone to this push for prevention.

“Skate the Lake is a family event. It’s not a race, it’s more a sense of community and bringing people together,” said Sterner. “And educating people … how to listen to their bodies and be their own advocates as best prevention.”

Participants can still sign up at B4BC’s 20th Annual Skate the Lake at https://www.classy.org/campaign/b4bcs-20th-annual-skate-the-lake/c567053

There is a minimum fundraising goal of $50 per person. Registration includes an event T-shirt, a goodie bag and raffle tickets. Prizes will be awarded to the top three fundraisers, individual and teams.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned skateboarder or simply someone who wants to support the cause on any set of wheels. The event’s accessibility reflects B4BC’s mission of making breast cancer awareness and education accessible.

This year’s fundraising goal is $50,000. At press time, the event had raised $20,045.

“In the past we’ve raised more than 75,000, so I’m hoping more than $75,000,” Sterner said.

There is also a virtual participation option. This approach allows supporters worldwide to join in by skating their local paths and sharing their experiences on social media using tags @b4bc #skatethelake. A photo contest winner will be chosen July 25.

As of press time, the top fundraiser is Clayton Fraser with $4,875 raised.

Fraser also has the most donors, 47.

The top team is Gleaming the Rubix with $3,905 raised.

Rolling Bazoombas has the most members, 9.

Lucia Vail, a University of Oregon and North Tahoe High School graduate, gave the most thorough pitch for a donation.

“The mission statement for B4BC is to ’empower young people to make positive and healthy choices that promote lifelong wellness through outreach, prevention, sustainability, and support programs for the prevention of cancer,’ all while celebrating life!,” wrote 19-year-old Vail.

This will be her 7th year participating.

“In 2022, I was the top fundraiser,” Vail said. “I started fundraising for B4BC because I believe in the importance of community service, cancer research, and supporting those impacted by cancer. Eliminating cancer is important to me because several of my family members and many of my friends have been painfully affected by cancer. I want cancer researchers to figure out how to prevent and eliminate ALL forms of cancer so that no one will suffer from this disease or its repercussions.”
