TAHOE CITY, Calif. – The Tahoe Housing Hub is now accepting applications for its groundbreaking Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) Accelerator Pilot Program. Inspired by Hello Housing’s successful “Hello ADU program,” it aims to empower Tahoe-Truckee homeowners to create much-needed housing for local workers. The program seeks to simplify and support the ADU development process by offering free technical assistance to the homeowner including project planning, permitting, construction management, and leasing.

ADUs, typically referred to as guest homes, in-law units, or secondary units, are compact, independent living spaces built on the same property as a primary residence. Recent California legislation promoting ADU construction has made these units a practical solution to help meet housing needs. The Tahoe Housing Hub aims to support this strategy at the local level to address our region’s housing challenges and the demand for smaller, more affordable entry-level housing. 

“This program is not just about building units, it’s about building opportunities for families and workers to thrive in the community they love,” said Erin Casey, president and CEO of the Tahoe Housing Hub. “This program removes the barriers homeowners often face when trying to build an ADU on their property by offering hands-on guidance from start to finish. By simplifying the process and connecting homeowners with the right resources, we’re working together to make it easier to create real, lasting change in the housing landscape of North Lake Tahoe and Truckee.”

The Tahoe Housing Hub is seeking committed homeowners in the North Lake Tahoe-Truckee region who are motivated, flexible, and willing to share feedback throughout the process. As this is a new initiative, participants’ experiences and insights will play a critical role in refining the program to ensure its long-term success. 

“If we can help build even a few new ADUs, that’s more first responders, teachers, nurses, small business owners, and many others who can afford to live where they work,” said Casey. “Each unit brings us one step closer to a more sustainable future for North Tahoe.”

Thanks to funding from the North Tahoe Community Alliance’s TOT-TBID Dollars At Work program and the Martis Fund, the program is fully funded, allowing services to be provided at no cost to homeowners. To qualify for the program, homeowners must meet the following criteria:

• Own a property located within Eastern Placer County or the Town of Truckee capable of accommodating an ADU.
• Homeowners must commit to renting the newly constructed ADU to a member of the Tahoe-Truckee workforce and may choose from two flexible options:
• A 3-year commitment to rent the unit at an affordable monthly rate; or
• A 5-year commitment without the monthly rent cap.
• Access to their own financing for the design, permitting, and construction of the ADU. The program will facilitate connections with professionals to explore financing options.

While the fall season approaches and construction may slow down, homeowners shouldn’t wait until spring to act. There are several important steps that can be completed during the winter months. Starting the process now is essential in our region to ensure a smooth and timely construction process when the season begins. With limited slots available, homeowners are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to secure their place in the program.

• Eligible applicants will be contacted for an initial intake call to assess their project’s feasibility.
• Selected participants will be notified and invited to join the program.
